{% section 'header' %}

Understanding the Triggers

Like many functions within the skin, the process of creating pigment is extremely complex. Melanin, which is responsible for determining the color of the skin, is created by the skin’s melanocyte cells through a process called melanogenesis. We have approximately 2,000 melanocytes per millimeter of skin. Naturally, the sheer number of these cells and the complexity of the process also means there is great susceptibility for issues to occur.

When damaged, the melanin production process changes, either by overproducing or losing the ability to create pigment. This is when issues occur, resulting in one of three types of pigment changes:

  • Hyperpigmentation –– darkened pigment
  • Hypopigmentation –– a lack of melanin in the skin
  • Demarcation –– uneven pigment

Causes of hyperpigmentation may include:

PIH (Post Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation)
Birth Control Pills
Estrogen (HRT)
Pregnancy (Melasma)
Long-Term Sun Exposure
Acne
Razor Bumps
Severe Sunburn
Eczema
Chemical Irritants
Electrolysis

Rashes
Abrasive Scrubs
Certain Prescription Medications
Chicken Pox
Picking
Scratching
Insect Bites
Trauma to Skin
Surgical Procedures
Perfumes Sprayed on Sun-Exposed Areas
